How to Make a Pouch Sling

Ta-Da! I have finally made a video on how to make a pouch sling. Here are the materials you will need:

2 yards of pretty fabric (this could be just about anything: calico, corduroy, silk brocade, etc)
2 yards of baby flannel in coordinating color
A friend to share your fabric with (this will make two slings)

**update: After a few questions about this, I wanted to let everyone know that you do not HAVE to use baby flannel for the lining. You can use the same fabric you are using on the outside or anything else you'd like. Also, if you want your pouch to just be one layer, choose a fabric that is double sided (like seersucker) and just hem the edges after you cut it down the middle. I choose baby flannel b/c it is soft, that's the only reason really**

**second update added March 2010: The width of your fabric should be 45". If you really like a wider fabric, by all means get it! Just trim down the side before you start. The wider the fabric you start with, the deeper the pouch will be.**

The video will walk you through all the steps. Please let me know if you need more help. Good luck!

Hey Leah,
I made my pouch sling the other night, and it was so easy, but the pocket seems to be a tight fit for my big 11 lb. 6 week old. Is it possible that the fabric I bought wasn't the right width? Or that I used fabric that wasn't stretchy enough? Any suggestions?

Shannon,
The first thing to check would be the width of the fabric. Your fabric should have been about 45" wide off the bolt. That means your sling (not folded in a pouch) should measure around 20" wide. If it is wider, you will need to cut even amounts off of each side to get it down to the right width. Then you will have to hem the sides back together. (You can rip everything out and start over, or fold each layer in and sew closed). If width is not your problem, you may have just made the pouch a little too small. My advice would be to rip out the french seam and see if you can sew it closer together to make the pouch bigger (this is a harder problem to fix). Let me know if either of these work/don't work and I will try to help. I'll add the width of fabric needed to the instructions.

Thanks, I will try your suggestions and let you know how it works. In the meantime, I bought fabric to make a (no sew) cotton wrap. Lilly LOVES it. Thanks for all your help.

Leah,
Thanks so much for having this blog! I just bought fabric yesterday for a cotton wrap and can't wait to take my little one out in it!
I'd also like to make a pouch sling, but don't have any flannel on hand. Could I use something different (like the Calico I'm using for the outside) or does it need to be flannel?

Unknown said...

Christy (& others),
I just updated the post in regards to fabric for the lining. Go ahead and use the calico if you'd like - it will make your sling lighterweight than if you use baby flannel.

Thanks so much for posting this! I've already made 3 pouch slings... 1 for me, an NCSU one for my hubby, and a Winnie the Pooh one for my 2 year old to carry her baby doll in as we await the arrival of our new little one at the end of the month! Your video made it SOOO easy... and being able to pause it, then complete a step, then play and so on made it effortless! Thanks for a tremendous ministry! :) amy

This was a great video. I have never made a double-layer pouch and now I'm looking forward to it! Also, I have it ingrained in my head not to use calico- I thought it was too thin and could rip. That's what Jan Andrea's site says, anyway.
Thanks so much for making this video! and i love your bump!

I have a question, though:how wide should it be in order to be perfect? You said about the length, but I'm not sure that the fabric in shops here has the same width as in America.
I have everything prepared, just waiting for your answer.Thank you. :)

Unknown said...

Julia_RO,
I'm so glad you found my blog. I am in Chicago and have met so many great Romanian people. Maybe God is trying to tell me something...

The perfect width for a pouch sling is to start with fabric that is 54/55 inches wide. You will cut that piece of fabric in half lengthwise to make your sling. That means that when you are ready to start sewing, your strip will be 27 inches wide by approximately 2 yards long.

Please let me know if you have more questions. Thanks!

Yay I made a pouch sling!! and I had never sewed anything before!! My mother in law just bought me a sewing machine and I decided a sling would be first!! :) :) YAY! I dont know... ha... ??? Help?? and a cool thing I did with mine is I wear it around my waist when I'm sitting at the computer with my son in it and he just naps in my lap and i dont have to worry about him fallin in the floor! ha.. hi I was just wondering.. maybe I missed the part about seam allowance. How much seam allowance do you provide. Say my measurement from shoulder to hip is 24inch.
Do i add 3 inch for seam allowance? Then cut the half smile?

Thanks!

WOW! Those tutorials are just for me. I'm a hands on person and have been trying to figure these out. Can you tell me where to purchase the rings for the ring sling? I need to find them wholesale. Thanks Angela

Anonymous said...

It's me again. Where can I purchase the rings for the ring sling and what size should I get? Thanks again, Angela

Unknown said...

Sorry for the delay in responding - teething baby at our house today.

You can purchase rings from www.slingrings.com. This is a great company and you can get bulk discounts (increments of 10, I believe).

Also, for seam allowance - I usually add an extra 2 inches for seams. It really depends on how careful of a sewer you are! :)

Unknown said...

Also Angela, I usually buy the medium size aluminum rings. If you have thick fabric, like a fleece, I would get the large. If you have a thin fabric, like a silk, I would get small. Any other fabrics, I'd stick with Medium. I believe the bulk discount can be applied to a selection of rings, not just 10 of the exact same ones. They also sell a variety pack.

Ling said...

Opps Leah! I watched the video many times but must have missed the seam allowance message.

I will attempt it today. Fingers and paws crossed.

Thank you for making this video--I totally understand how to make a sling now! I do have a question about fabric selection: I found a 100% cotton "quilter's" fabric that I like, (it's 44" wide), but on another "pouch-sling-making" site it said that quilter's fabric isn't good to use for a pouch sling unless it's doubled up. If I'm lining my sling with a baby flannel fabric, do I still need to double up the 100% cotton quilter's fabric? Will 44" inch wide fabric be sufficient to do so? (My shoulder-to-hip measurement is 22".)

Sheri said...

If you only knew how much I looked online on how to make this. I had a friend write instructions too....could not understand it! Your video is awesome. I am going to do it right now. (from some scrap fabric) and just see how I do. I will let you know how I did! :)

Thank you Thank you!!!!!

Sheri said...

OK...not so bad for a first time. Needs to be longer, but maybe without the huge stomach it might be perfect! ;) I will get it perfect by the time she arrives. Thank you so much. Quilter's fabric will work fine if you are lining with flannel - I have made a number of slings this way. 44" should also be fine. Let me know how it turns out.

This looked really easy and I'm not even a novice seamstress (well, kinda). However, my wrap did NOT turn out at all like yours. I did my measurement, but maybe because I just had my baby and I'm a little "fuller" on top, and I also used 100% cotton fabrics, with no stretch, there is no way my baby can fit into this pouch. I'm really sad because I was SOOOO excited to make it and now I just wasted half the day (between feeding and changing a newborn, this is all I've gotten done) and unless I was a size 4 or had really stretchy fabric, my sling is a waste. :( Any suggestions?????

Unknown said...

Anon,
I'm so sorry to hear this! It makes me so sad when someone has a bad experience - ugh. It's one thing to make a too big pouch sling smaller, but not so easy to make a too small one bigger. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much you can do. Could you e-mail me at leah payne at hotmail dot com?

I'm very excited to start making my pouch sling. Your directions seem easy enough to follow. I would like to use a light weight fabric, but I'm not sure that it would be strong enough w/out lining. I worry that my baby would get too warm if I add a flannel liner. Do you have any suggestions for fabric types to use? Thanks.

Do you think as a beginner sewer I can complete this project?

Unknown said...

CraftyQT,
Yes, I do think a beginner sewer can complete this project. I would say more of your problems will come with how to work your machine than with how to sew this project. You really only need to be able to sew a straight stitch for the entire project. PLEASE, ask questions if you get stuck! :)

Leah, I have a double sided material, do I have to line it or do 2 layers or can I do the pouch sling 1 layer of this double sided material? Thanks, I am glad I found your video and blog I plan on trying the pouch sling and wrap. I used a pouch sling with my first he only liked it for 3 months, then again he was born 10lbs, and my others were big too they didn't like it so i got rid of it. Now my fourth is a girl and wants mama all the time, so I did not want to buy one so expensive, I was glad to see your video, especially since I already have fabric from Africa that has been in my closet for 10 yrs, glad I finally found a use for it.versp

Anonymous said...

Another question, does the wrap have to be stretchy material. The one I was going to use is a stiffer fabric.

Unknown said...

Janet,
You do not have to line a pouch sling. The first pouches I made were of a stiffer, double-sided material. I just double hemmed the edges saw they looked finished. Good luck to you and please let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Leah!

It's one o'clock in the morning and I have just finished sewing my pouch sling with the guide of your video! It's really easy to make since your instruction is sooooo clear! Now my 2-month-old is in the sling :)

1) I used different pattern flannel material for both sides so it's reversible!
2) The best is to use 45", too wide is gonna make the sling too deep (i think)!!
3) I used exactlt the same measurement and it's perfect for me!

Thanks again! will share with my friends!

I am a novice sewer, always making little "simple" projects that usually take me days to complete! This took me exactly an hour and 15 minutes, including ironing the fabric and seams. Thank you very much for the idea. It's one more project I can check off my list! Very cute, very easy, and very functional.

Stcy said...

I just finished making a sling, however the inside loop around is about 1inch-1.5inches larger than the outside, so it like folds over and is baggy.

So basically one edge unfolded I ended up sewing longer??

I can email you pictures if you don't understand, and if it helps you figure out how to help me fix it.

I carried my 18 year old 6lb cat around it in and she was quite content and comfy.

Unknown said...

Stcy,
My suggestion would be to flip the sling around so that the long edge is on the outside and the short edge is on the inside. Or you can rip out the curved seam and re-sew it - just measure both sides before you sew to make sure they are even.

Let me know if that helps.

I am so glad to find your video and to start making my sling. One question that I am need clarified is what width of fabric I need. If I use 45" do I still cut it in half when starting so it is 22.5 x 2 yards? If I use 54" wide, half would be 27". Please clarify this for me so I can go get my fabric.
Thanks

Unknown said...

Anon,
I just updated the post to reflect the fabric width requirements. But, to answer your question, the piece of fabric you are starting with when you're ready to sew is 22.5" by 2 yards.

will a stretchy fabric work? I have something that is kinda like a stretchy shirt. I don't know what exactly what type it is, I don't think it's spandex.

Unknown said...

Diana - a stretchy fabric will work if the stretch makes the pouch deeper...you don't want the stretch to make it stretch out from your shoulder to your hip. Does that make sense? If it stretches that way, your pouch will stretch out to be too big.

You may want to consider making a wrap with your stretchy, t-shirt fabric. This is great fabric for a wrap. I have instructions for a wrap on my blog.

Ashley and Spencer Bunn said...

I was wondering does it matter if I folded the fabric the wrong way. for example i left the pattern folded the way it came length wise and the folded it in half, the sling works fine it's just VERY deep. and i also need to go in about an inch too which i thing should be easy, I'm a beginner sewer so i'm not sure if it's ok folding it that way.

Anonymous said...

Hi, i found your video and loved it so I went and bought some fabric today, but I was wondering if this measurement you did on the video is for smaller babies (somewhere like 0-6months)? Thsnks this was so easy to follow. I have been sewing for 40+ years and getting the side to line up with different fabrics can be tough. Try a walking foot for your machine and what I did was pin and sew my sides first and then I folded the fabric in fours and cut my 1/2 smile and that worked out great

Hello

Thanks for your video! I want to make a double pouch sling, similar to the K'Tan carrier, because I want the weight distributed on both shoulders instead of just a single shoulder. I have purchased a good piece of thick cotton/lycra (it's a bit like thick yoga wear knit) which is 60" wide, and I'm going to make single layer pouches. Do you have any tips for the width I should use for each side? Also, given that it is a stretch fabric, do you think I will need to make a rounded shoulder like you have done? Any tips you can give would be great. I'm a little scared of cutting the fabric and doing it wrong.

Elena Melling Photography said...

Hi! This was helpful! After cutting my fabric wrong about 3 times, I finally got it the right length by sewing an extra french seam and I ended up liking the look of it. I somehow missed your little note about how long the fabric was and since I was using a stretch material really did myself in. Eventually I got it and I added a square pocket from an old sweater too. It's adorable and wish I could keep it, but its for a friend. Oh and I finished the french seam on the outside. It held down that thick piece the baby will be up against and added a nice touch on the outside since I used contrasting thread. Good thing I'm busy enough or I might think I should start a WAHM business of my own! You can find me at www.emp-mpls.blogspot.com. Christ is King!

My daughter is now 4. I made a much simpler (but not as beautiful) version of this for her. Used even when she was a toddler as a hip seat for when she got tired. Just slip them in with feet towards you and wriggle the sling round to sit them on your hip. Used mine from birth to keep hands free for the first born and right up intil my child was 3!

As for an accurate size, the video directs you to measure from shoulder to opposite hip, across the midsection. This should give you the correct size for your body size/shape. Let me know if you need further clarification.

If you are using a sling, make sure the sling is tightly knotted, and if you are carrying an infant in a sling, check often to be sure the baby's head is properly positioned. It is possible for the infant's head to turn into your chest, which could block his or her airway.

Paid $35!!!! for the darn thing, and its not very comfy tbh... the new one I made using your pattern is absolutely EPIC! A soft knit flannel tie-dye fabric with a pretty pink fleece lining for those long 2mile winter walks =D its soft and has better stretch and my daughter loves...she wont go back to her old one at all!

what if I wanted to make one with the stretch band on the inside lining on the outer edges and make it hand a little lower with the part that goes on the neck skinnier than the rest? How much fabric and stuff would I need?

Just made mine from a flannel blanket after watching this video. Took me a few hours but it was definitely worth it. I'm a total newb at sewing but this tutorial made it possible. Thank you! :]

Thank-you very much for posting this video. Just finished my pouch-sling and, while baby is not here yet, my cabbage patch kid was very comfy in it! Very kind of you to upload!

Hi there, the fabric that I really wanted for the baby sling is only 44 inches wide, will this not be okay? Thank you so much! Sincerely, Kelly from Idaho :)

Hi Leah,

thank you for this video.
I made my pouch sling yesterday for my 1 month old daughter Eva. This one, i made from fabric that I had laying, left overs from the curtains and an old flannel bedsheet. It's tight but it works. Maybe it also takes a little more practice sliding the baby in. But i'm afraid as my daughter grows Anyway i'll make my next one a little longer and maybe not so wide. Also i think the fabric should not be as rigid as the curtain fabric i used and a smoother fabrick on the inside will make it easier to slide the baby in.

Hi! Great video!! I am looking to make a pouch sling for my daughter, but wasn't sure if this would be safe for her due to size and weight. She is 19mo 27lb and 30.5in tall. would this be a good choice for us? TIA!
